Laurentis fuels future of cancer care in Ontario with $500k donation to Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation
TORONTO, ON –A $500,000 donation from Laurentis Energy Partners (Laurentis) will help establish the Silber Family Theranostics Centre at the University Health Network’s (UHN) Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, one of the top cancer research centres in the world.
Theranostics combines nuclear imaging with targeted therapy, allowing physicians to treat serious diseases like cancer with precision. Announced today at a special event attended by Stephen Lecce, Ontario Minister of Energy and Mines; Dr. Keith Stewart, UHN’s Vice President of Cancer and Director of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre; and leaders from Laurentis, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), UHN, and the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, the donation marks a major milestone in the future of personalized cancer care.
The new centre is scheduled to open in 2027 and will combine advanced nuclear imaging with highly targeted radiation therapies to detect and treat cancer at the molecular level, offering patients earlier diagnosis, more precise treatment options, and a better chance at recovery.
By supporting the development of this world-class facility, Laurentis is helping to accelerate Ontario’s leadership in both cancer care and medical isotope innovation. The company’s growing supply of life-saving isotopes – including lutetium-177 (Lu-177), yttrium-90 (Y-90), and molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) – will power many of the new centre’s treatments.

Key facts
- Laurentis, a subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation (OPG), is North America’s most diverse and fastest-growing medical isotope producer.
- UHN is Canada’s hospital, with 10 sites and more than 44,000 TeamUHN members.
- Laurentis recently announced it’s set to begin producing therapeutic isotopes Y-90 and Lu-177 at OPG’s Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.
- Lu-177 is one of the fastest-growing therapeutic isotopes on the market, used in treating prostate, breast, and neuroendocrine cancers.
- Laurentis could produce enough Lu-177 at Darlington to supply nearly 3 million doses, enough to fully treat 500,000 patients each year, vastly increasing the global supply capacity.
- Y-90 plays a critical role in liver cancer treatment, one of the top causes of cancer death globally.
- The new Silber Family Theranostics Centre aims to deliver 3,550 treatments annually by 2028.
- Life-saving medical isotopes continue to be one of the most consequential tools doctors have available to diagnose and treat cancer over the past century, and many of these isotopes are now coming from Ontario’s nuclear generating stations.
